First Impressions

Lauren Hathaway- I couldn’t be happier to wake up at the crack of dawn because the world around me is already way ahead of me. The sound of roosters and dogs is mixed with laughter, the bustle of the market and happy children hurrying down the mountainside to school. I have never seen such beauty or felt such genuine joy as I have already encountered in my few days in Haiti. It all is enough to bring me to tears- the scenery, the people, the culture, the constant laughter and joy and love shared with us by complete strangers. Friendships spring up in a split second. Today was our first day in the clinic, and you can just feel the grateful hearts of those sitting in the chairs as we work around them. I could never get sick of the constant hand holding and hugs the sweet children share with us. I could spend forever here in what I’ve already decided is the happiest place on earth. I’ve had the adventure of a lifetime and it’s only day 3! Can’t wait to see what comes next 🙂

Maddie Sprite- Being my second time here, Haiti still never fails to amaze me every time from the moment I get off the plane.  This country is absolutely beautiful and the people here are even more beautiful. Words could never describe.  Everyone here is so selfless, giving of themselves when I am the one supposed to be giving to them.  I’ve never felt like any of these trips are “work” as many would describe them.  It is a pure gift to me to come here.  Every person I make eye contact with embraces me with a smile within seconds of seeing me- the universal sign of love.  And wow do I love all of these people with my entire heart.  Waking up at 6am has never been my cup of tea, but for some reason I find myself wanting to get up even earlier than that, anticipating what will change my life next that day.  It is an indescribable feeling that I’ll never be able to explain to someone else.  These people have changed my life forever and I love them with everything I have for doing that.  Clinic went wonderfully today and I am so looking forward for what the rest of this week has to offer.  I wish I could stay forever!!

Megan Braun- If it wasn’t for my sister and her words of encouragement, I don’t think I would have ever seen anything more beautiful in my life. In the first three days I have seen and met people who made me smile and then they smile right back. Already I can see how grateful all of the people are here in Seguin for us to come and help them. We may be pulling teeth but I still see the kids’ smiling faces. In the clinic today I was pleasantly surprised by how fast and efficient the dentists work. I learned a lot from them and most importantly how standing on your feet all day can hurt your back. I have seen how excited the kids are for school and the chance they have to have good oral hygiene. I miss my family and my friends if you are reading this haha. But I miss charlie the most.
